How to clean a seatbelt retractor reel

In this video, Kishen will walk you through how to maintain and clean your seatbelt retractor reel

A jammed seatbelt is more than an inconvenience — it can affect passenger safety and compliance. Small items such as sweet wrappers and plastic bags can work their way through the seat cushion and into the retractor reel, preventing the belt from extending or retracting correctly. Catching and clearing this debris is a quick fix that keeps your vehicles roadworthy and your passengers safe.

Video ranscript:

“Here’s a retractor for a three-point seat belt found under the seat cushion. What happens is things like sweet wrappers, plastics and stuff ends up getting pushed through the cushion into the retractor, therefore jamming it up. To fix this, simply remove the seat cushion and remove all plastics and papers that are caught up in the belt and maybe a quick vacuum around that area.”

Step 1 — Remove the Seat Cushion

Video Transcript:

“For maintenance purposes, it’s easier if you remove the seat cushion. Use a clip remover by inserting it underneath and in between the frame and the seat base, then popping 1 and 2. On the seat we have two large press studs and on the frame we have two receptors. By placing the clip remover in between the frame and the seat base, you pop this out of that — and there you have it.”

Before you can access the retractor, the seat cushion needs to come off. The cushion is held in place by two press studs that connect to receptors on the frame. You will need a clip remover tool.

  1. Insert the clip remover underneath the seat, between the seat base and the frame.
  2. Locate the two press stud connections — one on each side — and use the clip remover to pop each one free.
  3. Lift the seat cushion clear and set it aside on a clean surface.

Step 2 — Clean the Retractor Reel

With the cushion removed, you will have clear access to the three-point seatbelt retractor reel underneath. Check for any items lodged in the belt or around the reel housing.

  1. Remove any plastics, wrappers, or other debris caught in the belt or wrapped around the retractor.
  2. Vacuum the surrounding area to clear any loose material.
  3. Extend and retract the belt a few times to confirm it runs freely before refitting the cushion.

Step 3 — Refit the Seat Cushion

Video Transcript:

“To put the seat cushion back on, this pocket here needs to lock under this tab here. Take the seat cushion and place it in position and push it all the way back to line up the two poppers at the front and just give it a quick tap in — and you’re all done.”

Refitting the cushion is straightforward. The rear of the cushion locates under a tab on the seat frame first, then the front poppers click into place.

  1. Position the rear of the cushion so that the pocket hooks under the tab on the seat frame.
  2. Push the cushion all the way back into position, then align the two press studs at the front with the frame receptors.
  3. Press down firmly to click both poppers into place. Give the cushion a gentle tug to confirm it is secure.

Maintenance tip: Make checking the seat base area part of your routine vehicle clean. Clearing small items early prevents retractor jams from developing.
