I’m in the back of a Nissan NV350. This is a small to medium-sized van, similar size comparison to a Toyota Hiace ZX. Biggest challenge in these vehicles when it comes to transporting wheelchair occupants is the constraint of space.
We have a very unique solution here in New Zealand for these vehicles, which suits healthcare operators, taxi operators, people wanting to maximise seating passenger capacity, and the flexibility for up to two wheelchair occupants. A double fold-away seat, and this is a brilliant solution to your mobility needs. So with the double fold-away seats folded away, and three single side folds folded away also, we’ve got plenty of space for two large wheelchairs. This vehicle is equipped with 160 kg wheelchair restraint sets. These are self-retracting meaning that if there’s any slippage as you’re going over bumps, they’ll retract even further, making it a very secure and safe transport solution. We have east to west running tracks, making a very flexible arrangement for securing different sized wheelchairs in the vehicle. At the back we have a hoist that is a 400 kg capacity, fixed platform, and it is the most durable, functional hoist on the market in New Zealand. The least amount of running parts to potentially go wrong, and makes it easier for servicing and maintenance long-term.
For just a single wheelchair transport, you can simply fold these double seats down. And you can have up to five passengers seated in the rear.
So for a small to medium-sized van, up to two wheelchair capacity, and 10 seats total, including the driver, this is the most functional, flexible mobility solution in New Zealand .
